Description
The Melocactus matanzanus is a striking, spherical cactus native to Cuba, which is particularly valued for its unique appearance and the development of a characteristic, felt-like ‘cap’ upon maturity. This plant is a real eye-catcher and a must-have for lovers of unusual cacti.
Key Features
- Appearance: The cactus has a vibrant, bright green, spherical body with brown spines.
- Cephalium: Upon maturity, the plant develops a striking, red to purple colored felt-like ‘cap’ on top, the so-called cephalium. This is a unique structure from which the flowers later grow.
- Flowers and Fruits: Pink or pinkish-red flowers emerge from the cephalium in the summer. These are followed by small, finger-shaped, pink, red, or magenta-colored fruits, which are considered edible and have a mild, sweet-and-sour taste.
- Size: It is a relatively small species, typically reaching a mature height of about 10 to 30 cm.
- Distinctive: Unlike some other cacti, the Melocactus matanzanus has no central spine.
Care Tips
- Light Requirements: The plant requires plenty of light for optimal growth and flowering. However, direct sunlight can cause scorching, so moderate shade or protection from the hottest sun is recommended.
- Watering: During the active growing season (summer), the plant should be watered regularly and thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. In winter, it requires less water, but the roots must not dry out completely; an occasional small splash of water is sufficient.
- Soil and Pot: Use a well-draining, porous potting mix (a special mix for cacti and succulents) to prevent root rot. A shallow, wide pot is ideal.
- Temperature: The Melocactus matanzanus is heat-loving and prefers a minimum temperature of 17°C, although it can survive temperatures down to 10°C.
- Nutrition: During the growing season (spring and summer), you can apply cactus fertilizer once a month.
