Description
Mammillaria senilis is a special cactus species, recognizable by its dense, white hairs that give it a woolly appearance. These “hairs” protect the plant from intense sun and cold in its natural habitat (Mexico).
When mature, it can produce beautiful pink to purplish-red flowers at the top of the plant.
Because Mammillaria senilis grows slowly and is sometimes sensitive on its own roots, it is often grafted onto Myrtillocactus. The rootstock (Myrtillocactus) is vigorous and ensures:
faster growth
better resistance
easier maintenance
The result is a decorative, strong cactus with a striking contrast between the woolly top and the blue-green rootstock.
Care
🌞 Light
Requires plenty of light
Tolerates sun, but let it acclimate to direct sunlight
Ideal: bright spot with some direct sun (south/east-facing windowsill)
💧 Water
Water moderately
During the growing season (spring–summer):
only water when the potting soil is completely dry
In autumn and winter:
almost no water
Note: the grafting site must not remain wet for extended periods
🌡 Temperature
Summer: 18–30 °C
Winter: preferably cool (5–12 °C), but frost-free
Cool winter stimulates flowering
🌱 Soil
Well-draining cactus soil
Optionally mix with extra sand or perlite
🌼 Nutrition
In spring and summer:
Cactus fertilizer once a month
Do not fertilize in winter
🪴 Repotting
Every 2–3 years
Check when repotting whether the rootstock (Myrtillocactus) is healthy
